Culture and Arts
The AUF Performing Arts was organized to meet the cultural needs of the academic community and that of the surrounding residents of AngelesCity and Pampanga. The rich cultural heritage of Pampanga further motivated the University President, Emmanuel Y. Angeles, to institute policies and programs that would bring to the fore Kapampangan songs, dances and plays.
Originally, the Performing Arts consisted of five divisions: AUF Dance Troupe/Anklung Ensemble, AUF Rondalla, AUF Band, AUF Concert Chorus and Dulaang AUF. Except for Dulaang AUF, the office still maintains the aforecited divisions. These groups have been kept busy with the local and national engagements which have brought them to the width and breadth of the country. When the Anklung Ensemble and the AUF Concert Chorus welcomed Luciano Pavarotti at the Westin Philippine Plaza on March 16, 1994, it was reported that the world-renowned opera singer was deeply moved by the renditions given by the Anklung Ensemble and the Concert Chorus.
One of the lasting contributions of the Performing Arts to the AUF community, is the AUF HYMN, the lyrics which were composed by Peter A. de Vera (Artistic Director, 1992; Consultant, AUF Performing Arts) Gildo "Boron" A. Garcia, AUF Performing Arts Director, supplied the melody. Director Garcia also did the musical arrangement of the theme song of the "Mr. and Ms. University Pageant," an annual beauty pageant that has helped launched the careers of supermodels and beauty titlists, Abygale Arenas, Lucille Cunanan, Linda Ann Moore, Lorena Pangan, Maricel Morales and Marilyn Maristela. Teresita Abad Santos, former faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences, wrote the lyrics of the song.
Peter A. de Vera who is an active member of the World Dance Alliance attended the dance workshop which was sponsored by the World Dance Alliance Global Center in Philadelphia on June 19-21, 1999. Mr. de Vera is also connected with the Sinukuan Training Center for the Arts.
Dr. Aurelia L. Villaraza is the adviser of the Performing Arts, a distinction she has held since 1992. Dr. Villaraza is also the in-house scriptwriter of the Performing Arts and the former Medical Director of the Angeles University Medical Center.
