The growth and development of every country depends largely on its available resources, its kind of leadership and governance, and the innate ability of its people to meet their basic needs and respond to the demands of modern times.
For Filipinos, this line of thought has been challenged many times over by socio-economic, political, cultural, religious and environmental forces. Home to more than 85 million people, the Philippines today is still a nation struggling to attain sustainable development and economic stability in the face of seemingly endless adversities.
Despite the well-meaning efforts of the Arroyo administration to provide accessible basic social services to the people such as education, health, livelihood and infrastructure development, much more needs to be done to alleviate poverty and improve the lives of the Filipinos.
This was the same compelling reason that fueled the establishment of the Angeles University Development Foundation, Inc. (AUDF) 22 years ago on November 29, 1984. The core function of the AUDF is to provide management and financial support to Angeles University Foundation (AUF) and the AUF Medical Center (AUFMC), both private non-stock, non-profit institutions based in Angeles City, Philippines. AUDF was granted recognition by the US Treasury Department on August 23, 1985 to receive donations and be exempted from paying federal taxes.
Now on its 23rd year, the AUDF continue to hold the torch of hope for many Filipinos who dream of obtaining quality education and healthcare, through the following programs:
Donation of Hospital Equipment
AUDF has been spearheading fund-raising projects since 1988 for the benefit of AUFMC, which was awaiting completion back then. Negotiations with ten (10) hospitals in California and two in Wisconsin were successfully forged resulting to the donation of hospital equipment estimated at US$ 800,000.00. Last year alone, the World Medical Relief in Detroit, Michigan donated hospital equipment to AUFMC amounting to US$ 1,100,640.00.
Today, AUFMC is the only private tertiary teaching, training and research hospital in the Central Luzon region which serves as the base hospital of AUF's medical, nursing and allied medical students.
Observation and Educational Tours
Observation and educational tours are part of the regular programs arranged by AUDF for the professional growth of AUF faculty and personnel. Agreements and collaborative undertakings are forged with US education insitutions and healthcare facilities for joint projects and exchange programs.
Consultation Visits
On a regular basis, members of the AUDF Board of Trustees visit AUF and AUFMC to review management systems and policies, and study project proposals. This practice is anchored on the belief that AUDF must maintain close coordination with its overseas institutions to ensure the proper management of funds and grants obtained from American benefactors.
Placement of Graduates
One unique funtion of AUDF is to provide placement assistance to graduates of AUF who are holders of the following degrees: BS Nursing, BS Physical Therapy, BS Occupational Therapy, BS Medical Technology, BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology. Hundreds AUF alumni are now gainfully employed in hospitals, health facilities and corporations in the US and its territories courtesy of AUDF's support.
Linkages with U.S. Universities and Other Institutions
During the last 22 years, AUDF has been forming strategic linkages with universities and institutions in the U.S. particularly in Oklahoma, New Jersey, New York, Washington DC, Texas & California aimed at strengthening the medical training and internship of AUF medical and allied medical graduates. Through this support facility, students earn on-the-job training thereby preparingthem for iminent employment in the US.
Fund-Raising Projects
After the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo on June 15, 1991, fund-raising projects for the victims were initiated by AUDF through benefit dinners and range sales conducted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin & California. The amount of US$50,000.00 was raised and spent to support the resettlement of victims. Today, AUDF continue to invite funding institutions to support development projects for AUF and AUFMC.
Medical Missions
Medical missions are conducted on a yearly basis to the poor and disadvantaged communities in the Philippines. American and Fil-Am specialists are invited to provide free medical and surgical services, and medicines to indigent patients using medical equipment and facilities available at the AUFMC. Medicines and supplies used annually amount to no less than US$30,000.00
Aside from medical/surgical missions, AUFMC also has its Indigency Program which has served a total of 62,000 poor in- and out-patients in the last 16 years.

Nurturing a Culture of Exellence
ANGELES UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION
Angeles University Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit educational institution, was established on May 25, 1962 by Mr. Agustin P. Angeles, Dr. Barbara Y. Angeles and family. After only less than nine years of successful operation, the Institution was granted University status on April 16, 1971 by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
On December 4, 1975, the University was converted into a non-stock, non-profit educational foundation -- a decision of the founding family motivated by the sincere desire to perpetuate the missionary commitment of providing relevant and quality education to the Central Luzon region. Concomitant with this decision , the Angeles couple and their children, namely, Rosario, Lutgarda, Emmanuel, Antonio, Jesusa, Josefina and Lourdes executed a Deed of Donation of their shareholdings in favor of the foundation as starting fund which resulted to the relinquishment of their ownership and proprietary rights. AUF was incorporated under Republic Act No. 6055, otherwise known as the Foundation Law, and is a tax-exempt institution approved by the Philippine government. All donations and bequests given to the AUF are tax deductible.
On February 14, 1978, AUF was converted into a Catholic University making it the first in Central Luzon.
On October 27, 2003, AUF was granted autonomous status by CHED in recognition of its exemplary service to the community through the triad higher education functions of instruction, research and community service, thereby empowering it to function more independently.
Now celebrating 45 successful years, AUF has a wide range of academic programs supported by state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, aimed at addressing the growing needs of the global academic community.

The Dream that Almost Remained a Dream
AUF MEDICAL CENTER
The first and only private tertiary teaching, training and research hospital in Central Luzon established on February 23, 1990, the AUFMC is a non-stock, non-profit medical foundation committed to the philosophy of the founders that "no one should be denied quality healthcare due to poverty".
The construction of the five-storey AUFMC building was made possible by a soft loan of P 35 million from the Philippine Social Security System. To finance the acquisition of hospital equipment, another P 16.5 million bridge financing loan was obtained from the Development Bank of the Philippines. Donations of hospital supplies and equipment were also received from the St. Anthony Family Medical Center in Milwaukee and the following hospitals in California:Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Brookside Hospital, Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center, Sierra Madre Memorial Hospital, Tracy Community Memorial Hospital, Mayers Memorial Hospital, Children's Medical Center of Northern California, Kaiser North Hospitals, Kaiser South Hospitals, and the Queen of Angels Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital.
At present, AUFMC's income and surplus from operations are plowed back to support charity patients, employee benefits and for the continuing improvement of facilities.

The AUF Information Technology Training Center (ITTC) is a joint project of AUDF and the Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) USAID. Inaugurated on September 5, 2000, this modern facility has brought AUF to the forefront of I.T. education.

The AUF Our Lady of Lourdes Hall was constructed also through the generous support of the ASHA-USAID. Inaugurated on Dec. 4, 1987, it is a spacious, fully air- conditioned library building which houses 49, 993 titles (in 64, 661 volumes) of print materials and 3,820 on-line library resources.

AUDF has embarked on yet another ambitious project through its Development Fund Campaign to support the following major projects:
A. SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR THE POOR
B. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AUF MEDICAL TOWER
C. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AUF CENTER FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
EDUCATING THE POOR FOR FREE through various scholarships, grants and financial aids has earned for AUF the respect and admiration of the academic community. For the 2nd semester of SY 2006-2007 alone, a total of 859 students or 11.6% of the total enrolment of 7,428 were given scholarship grants and financial support with an imputed cost of US$ 300,000.00 . This is clearly and truly way above the Philippine government's requirement of 2%.
In the last 45 years, AUF has spent some US$ 4 M to support the education of 30,000 poor but deserving students by providing them free tuition and miscellaneous fees, books, school supplies, uniform, board and lodging facilities.

THE AUF MEDICAL TOWER
The proposed AUF Medical Tower aims to provide specialized healthcare in pediatric and geriatric medicine. Upon completion, it would be the first of its kind in Central Luzon and the Philippines. Total project cost is US$ 8.45 million. On the foreground is the existing AUF Medical Center which provides general hospital services. |
INFO TIDBITS: Central Luzon, Philippines is a major industrial and agricultural center north of Metro-Manila. It is strategically located between the commercial center of Manila and the industrial and trading centers of Northern Luzon. With a population of eight million and an annual population growth of 2.12% , it consists of six provinces, namely, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan and Zambales. Of its total population, 36.5% are aged 0-14 years old, while 3.7 % are aged 65 years and over. Despite the socio-economic prospects that augurs well for Central Luzon, the region is still wanting in terms of specialized healthcare for its young and aging population, and this prompted the proponent to formulate a development plan in response to the urgent clamor for a specialized health facility
The proposed AUF CENTER FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT is in response to the urgent need for a sustainable, effective and responsive development program for the Filipino youth in the face of socio-economic upheavals in the Philippines today. Total project cost is US$ 10.13 million |

|
There are 164 private and public colleges and universities in Central Luzion but NONE is equipped with the needed facilities to engage in a continuing youth leadership development program. There is a compelling need to provide for an appropriate venue where the youth can be groomed into becoming good citizens through various academic, cultural and sports undertakings where they can develop self-reliance, imbibe social responsibility, nurture a spirit of volunteerism and help preserve the democratic tradition. The proposed AUF Center for Youth Development is a place where young people, regardless of race, creed and economic status, can join together in wholesome education, recreation and companionship, . It is anchored on the tenet: YOUTH TODAY, LEADERS TOMORROW".
"Helping make a difference in the lives of our people goes beyond providing them equal access to basic social services, it also means empowering them to make important decisions and preparing them to assume important roles in society." |
 |
|
During the next five years, AUDF needs to raise US$ 22 million to support and sustain the aforementioned projects. Ambitious indeed, this pioneering effort will provide AUF and AUFMC strengthened institutional capacity to fulfill its objective of societal transformation through education, research, community service and improved public health.
The generosity of our benefactors will go a long way in providing the Filipino youth and other disadvantaged sectors of society a chance to uplift their lives. AUDF believes that helping make a difference in the lives of our people goes beyond providing them equal access to basic social services, it also means empowering them to make important decisionsand preparing them to assume important roles in society.
