The New York State bar examination is administered twice a year on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of every February and July. The bar examination contains two sections, the New York section (worth 60%) which is given on Tuesday, and the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) (worth 40%) which is given on Wednesday. The New York section consists of five essay questions (worth 40%), 50 multiple choice questions (worth 10%), and one Multistate Performance Test question (worth 10%). The second day of the exam is the MBE section which consists of 200 multiple choice questions.
In addition, candidates for admission to the New York Bar must successfully complete the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). The MPRE exam is administered separately from the New York Bar Exam and can be taken before or after the bar examination. Effective March 2002, the MPRE passing score in New York is a scaled score of 85. |
